Level Rank Thresholds
Cinnamon BunLevel Rank Thresholds are the progression rule that converts numerical levels into recognized ranks. Its decisive thresholds are stated by the Exploration Guild: levels one through ten belong to the first rank, advancement past level ten enters the second rank, and advancement past level twenty enters the third. The system therefore gives the leveling structure social and administrative consequences, not merely combat significance.
Definition and Thresholds
The rule is explained to Broccoli Bunch when she asks about the responsibilities attached to joining the Exploration Guild. The guild representative first confirms that responsibilities vary by rank, then identifies the first boundary as the transition beyond level ten and the next as the transition beyond level twenty. A character at level six, such as Broccoli Bunch at this point in the story, remains in the first rank; a member at level eleven or higher is in the second, while reaching level twenty-one or more is required to enter the third.
The phrasing places the thresholds just beyond the named level rather than treating level ten or level twenty as belonging to the higher category. It presents rank as a staged progression: an initial band for new adventurers, a more advanced band after the first ten levels, and a rarer third band for those who continue beyond twenty. The explanation also suggests that third-rank advancement is uncommon, since the guild representative describes those who reach it as few.
Guild Responsibilities and Institutional Use
Level Rank Thresholds determine how the Exploration Guild distributes responsibility. The guild representative tells Broccoli Bunch that first-rank entrants have few immediate obligations, even though the guild has many responsibilities overall. Rank thus operates as a gatekeeping mechanism: it limits what the organization expects from a novice while leaving room for greater duties as the member becomes stronger.
The same conversation connects rank with opportunity. Broccoli Bunch learns that she is level six and is told that she will have opportunities to grow stronger with the guild. The rule consequently frames advancement as both personal development and institutional eligibility. Becoming stronger changes not only what she can do, but also the category under which the guild evaluates her and the work it may reasonably assign to her.
The wider guild environment reinforces this administrative logic. Broccoli Bunch seeks directions from city guards while trying to find the Exploration Guild headquarters, becomes a temporary member, and later discusses that membership with Julien over a meal. Her entry is therefore mediated through ordinary officials, membership procedures, missions, and payment arrangements rather than through strength alone. Rank thresholds supply the underlying scale by which those encounters can classify her.
Broccoli Bunch’s Position in the System
Broccoli Bunch’s level six places her securely within the first rank when she enters the guild’s orbit. That status helps explain why the guild initially treats her as a junior entrant and why the representative says that significant responsibilities do not yet apply to her. Her position is not presented as permanent incapacity; it is an early stage in a measurable progression, one that promises advancement if she continues adventuring.
The rule also makes her later treatment more pointed. When a guild leader orders Gabriel to give her standard mission pay and show her out, the stated reason is that she is a liability: her level is too low and her class appears unsuitable for the guild’s work. Amaryllis Albatross objects that Broccoli Bunch has already saved her life, while explaining that Rainnewt accepted Broccoli Bunch outside proper channels and arranged her missions. The conflict exposes a tension between demonstrated action and bureaucratic classification. Broccoli Bunch’s first-rank level becomes evidence used against her even though her conduct has produced results that exceed what the institution expects from a novice.
Progression, Risk, and Significance
The thresholds make danger legible within the book’s game-like world. Adventures include encounters with Abominations, investigations of magical ley lines, and night attacks by Slimes; such work carries consequences that can exceed a newcomer’s apparent capacity. Broccoli Bunch herself recognizes the practical risk of lacking even a healing potion after meeting the monsters, and Dylan warns that a good potion can mean the difference between life and death. Rank does not remove those dangers, but it provides the guild with a formal language for judging whether an adventurer should be exposed to them.
At the same time, the rule shows how formal categories can transfer risk downward. A low-level entrant may be welcomed when useful, paid for completed work, or granted temporary membership, yet the institution can later reinterpret that same entrant as a liability. The Exploration Guild’s crisis makes the contradiction visible: Broccoli Bunch’s first-rank status supports the argument for expulsion, while her actual experience—including saving Amaryllis Albatross and helping correct guild mistakes—supports retaining her. Level Rank Thresholds therefore function both as a progression ladder and as an instrument of institutional power.
The rule’s narrative importance lies in this double role. It promises a clear path from first rank through second and third, giving the leveling system concrete milestones, but it also creates friction whenever numerical status conflicts with lived competence. Broccoli Bunch’s level six is simultaneously a promise of growth, a reason to restrict her responsibilities, and a vulnerability that others can invoke when suspicion rises. Through these thresholds, advancement becomes not only a matter of gaining power but also a struggle over who is entitled to be trusted.
